Holy @#$%, There's Going to Be a Dark Tower Movie Trilogy... AND a TV Series

Seriously. My mind is blown. Maybe Dark Tower fans could have hoped for a movie or a trilogy directed by a Darren Aronovsky or a Chris Nolan or something, but honestly, I think the actual news is still probably better:

Universal is making a Dark Tower trilogy of movie and a TV series. Furthermore, the TV series will run in-between all three movies, bridging them together. This is ****ing amazing.

The only downside is that the project is in the hands of Ron Howard, Akiva Goldsman and Brian Grazer. Howard will direct at least the first movie and TV series, Golsman will write the movie scripts, and Grazer will produce. This is pretty much the team that did The Da Vinci Code movie, which is hardly a benchmark of fine cinema, but it's also the team that did A Beautiful Mind -- point is, they're competent if nothing else, and I think that's probably a small price to pay to get the movie trilogy/TV series deal. They've also won Academy Awards, if that means anything to you (it doesn't to me). Maybe a few more details courtesy of Deadline will sweeten the deal for you?
The plan is to start with the feature film, and then create a bridge to the second feature with a season of TV episodes. That means the feature cast--and the big star who'll play Deschain--also has to appear in the TV series before returning to the second film. After that sequel is done, the TV series picks up again, this time focusing on Deschain as a young gunslinger. Those storylines will be informed by a prequel comic book series that King was heavily involved in plotting. The third film would pick up the mature Deshain as he completes his journey. They will benefit from being able to use the same sets cast and crew for the movie and TV, which could help contain costs on what will be a financially ambitious undertaking.

oh good!! now I don't have to read the books.
I read 1/2 way through with Gunslinger with many interuptions and couldn't get into his writing style or his story, it's probably the only Stephen King book I could not get into, but I so badly wanted to see what happens with the rest of the series and the actual tower.

No way. You're doing yourself a disservice. Power through with The Gunslinger - it only gets better and King admits that it's the worst book in the series, in his opinion (though I really enjoyed it).

I'm excited for this cross-media 'experiment', but many people are reserved, feeling that since it's NBC the adult nature of the story will have to be glossed over to make it more appealing for younger viewers, which will be a true pity. I think it has a lotta potential though, and Ron Howard, while he has his flaws, is a big name... This formula of theirs could prove to be the next big thing for entertainment, if they pull it off correctly. But the bottom line? Don't rely on them to finish the story for you.

I am too much of a fan! They will ruin it!

How can they ever properly portray the sound the thinny makes, or its effect on the people? Or the Drogans? Or or or....

Gunslinger is a piece of shit, King admits to this himself.

If you get through it, it just gets better and better with each book, both in story and writing.

In a way you sort of need the Gunslinger to be rubbish, so you can notice the vast improvement as time goes on.

And the world does in fact move on, while reading this series because it took even uber fast reader like Tanith almost a year now.

    Yar.

It gets intense. Had to stop after each book and take a breather by reading a few other novels inbetween. Usually I plough through a trilogy/follow-on one after each other.

    Not this time.

I think that this is a close tie with Gemmel's Troy for top spot on my bookshelf.

I'm enjoying the Graphic Novels if that counts for anything. I'll attempt to actually read the books when I don't have anything better to do one day.

About 100 pages from the end of the last book.

I am drawing it out like crazy because I don't want to let it go. I love/hate the end of books.

I don't know about the ending of book 5 Eyegod. It was sad, but I knew it was coming, so it didn't catch me off guard.

Can't really discuss much with you here though since the spoiler tags aren't working.

Yeah, saw it coming indeed, but I was still gutted. Anyhow, enough of that lest someone who hasn't read it comes crying!
