    Long Range Wireless

    Hey there

I would like to hook up my house with my brother's.

His house is a double storey, mine a single story, about 3km apart.

Im pretty confident I could get line of site, but would also elevate the aerial on my single storey if needs be.

What is the best complete solution (all hardware requirements) for both homes?

PS. the double storey has the ADSL router connection.

    Thanks
    Nazmo

Most likely a solution that's a hell of a lot more expensive than just getting a second ADSL account and router....but I'll let the guys who know more about this answer.

    about 3km apart.
    TL; DR

Dude it'll cost a fortune to implement wireless equipment that can do 3km. Forget it.

Actually, 3km is relatively short distance.
And the cost is between R1000 and R2000 for ALL equipment needed.
Its basically 2 units, 2 ethernet cables from unit to router, line of site...

I have quite a few friends that has already done it, so feasibility is not an issue.

I already contacted a company that does it, but want to give Prophecy the opportunity to give their best solution, as I use them often.

So you want to lay CAT5e from one place to the other and just look at the wireless option?

    Dude, no. Just no.

We have 2 offices with a distance of maybe 600m between them and we're using wireless but unless you spend a ridiculous amount of money on it, it will never be worth it. The last wireless equipment we bought cost us 15k and the drop in speed is HUGE.

Get another ADSL Line & modem. It won't cost you nearly as much as decent equipment.

Your best bet for price and range wise would be to use the kits that the WUG (wireless user group) communities supply/recommend.
I would get a cheap directional high gain transceiver that's amplified via the stuff you get in a WUG kit.
The range of wireless connection depends on the line-of-sight you have to your bother's place, so if it is clear then 3km should be doable.
All the equipment (excluding any other costs) would cost you about R3000, you may be able to pick it up cheaper at their classifieds.

Also keep in mind that you'll have pretty horrible latency when connecting to the internet via this method and you might also experience severe packet loss which could slow your speeds down to a crawl. So I hope you're not planning on playing any online games in the future.

I'm just using my limited knowledge of wireless here so I recommend you ask the guys on the WUG sites for reliable advice.

3km is nothing I'm connecting to a node almost 14k's away.

Got to Jawug's homepage and scour their classifieds, I'd recommend a standard 5.8Ghz microtik board with a grid antenna at least 24 dbi strong.

Here's a link to the forum index however you need to register to get access to the classifieds.

You should pick something up for under R2000.

    EDIT:
As mentioned I wouldn't recommend it for a internet connection though...

Scoop - Leading Distributor of Network Equipment in SA -

Should give you pretty much all you need.

If you have proper line of sight then two of these should pretty much do the job for the best cost/clean solution.

    Ubiquiti Networks - AirOS - - NanoBridgeM, 5GHz, 25dBi (400mm dish)

NanoBridge M | Ubiquiti Networks, Inc.

Although apparently this one will do the job for you as well, in a more omni-directional fashion.

And it's quite possible to do some crazy links over some crazy distances. I know the Mikrotik guys have a link from Cape Town all the way somewhere to Saldanha which is about 50km or so doing a solid 54Mbps with reasonable latency.

    Hey Nazmo,

I'm afraid that the WUG guys, or the Scoop guys are your only realistic options. We cannot supply any of these types of equipment unfortunately

    Good luck!
