In the market for a new 22'+ monitor for external display & gaming.

    Hey guys

I'm looking into getting a new monitor for use primarily as an external display for my MacBook Pro, but just as much for gaming on the Xbox 360...

A quick google turned up the Samsung SyncMaster XL2370 and Asus VH236H, and I've looked on the PH shop for these, but since they're older I imagine there's older and better models out there at the moment.

What's of primary concern to me at this point is multiple inputs that I can switch between freely - I'm looking for HDMI, DVI and VGA as options on the monitor. Not too concerned with built in sound.

Also looking to possibly purchase this from the PH shop, so would really appreciate some advice from anyone who's willing to give it.

    Thanks!

If those have all 3 and they're in stock then I say go for it since it's rare for a monitor to have all 3 connectors. Especially since VGA connectors are rapidly dying out/just about gone. Most new monitors only have HDMI and DVI or if they're TV crossovers then they'd have HDMI and D-Sub.

Shumi you should really look again, Almost all monitors under 21,5" comes with VGA(D-Sub) and/or DVI (some cheaper models only VGA and not DVI...), and since the new Law on HDMI came out VGA(D-Sub) has really come alive again, espesially since Most TV's uses VGA as well.

However for a 24" that might be hard and expect them to be expecive cause of the tax they do attract. (TV licence TAX)
A screen that was nice was the BX2450 as they had 2x HDMI inputs and a VGA port but has been EOL'ed.
Samsung really makes and discontinue's their monitors at a rapid rate so don't expect the P2450 to be around for much longer as it is already been EOL'ed at suppliers.

If you want a 24" I would suggest you look at this one:
    Prophecy.co.za - Samsung S24A350HS 24 2ms 5,000,000:1 Rose Black Widescreen LED Monitor

My general feeling is that you really are going to have to choose either HDMI+VGA or DVI+VGA unless you are able to find one with multiple inputs.

I'd confused D-Sub with S-Video when I made that post and thus thought it was an entirely different port :/ I'd forgotten that VGA = D-Sub.
It's still ultra rare to get all 3 ports on a monitor though.

Thanks George - that sounds like the monitor for me - HDIM + D-sub (which I assume is VGA from your post) is exactly what I need to make my setup work.

    What about this one...

    Benefits - 23" S23A950D Series 9 LED 3D Monitor - LED monitor - monitors | SAMSUNG

Might give you an outlet to experiment with the 3D thing as well.

Sure Prophecy will have them in stock soon. They are also rather sexy.

They've been on the shop for quite some time already.

    Prophecy.co.za - Samsung S23A950D 23 2ms 1000:1 Widescreen 3D LED Monitor Incl. Active 3D G

    But they're hellishly expensive.

Does anyone know if it's better to get an IPS monitor or a TN? I read that IPS is best but that was a while ago.

LG IPS screen R2000 from game. Not sure

IPS is best for colour reproduction
Conventional LCDs/TN is best for gaming.

Basically IPS is awesome...but tends to have a response time slower than what gamers want though they are slowly very very slowly improving.

2000 sounds mighty cheap for it to be a good enough IPS (unless it's 19")....not to mention I'm not currently aware of any mainstream IPS screens LG makes...

My monitor went just before Xmas so I was also doing the rounds during and after after till just past the new years. The Dell above is only 5ms and so I went with the 23" Samsung S23A350H LED Monitor which is 2ms and leaves no ghosting and is NOT 3D. Really nice monitor and I'm actually happy. You might want to try the S24A350H which is 24".

I'm not sure it makes a huge difference and often these specs are made up. It'll also be Grey to Grey speeds so I'm inclined to look for reviews or even go to the store, plug it into a HD football match video feed and see what it looks like.

Ooh. I like the look of that Dell (and for an LED monitor it's price isn't half bad). If my monitor failed today I'd rush out and buy that.
The LED monitor on my sister's Dell Inspiron laptop is stunning, it's got way more colour bang than my old LG.

By fail do you mean an 'accidental' hammer to the screen?

Lol no, I value my LG W2252TQ-PF too much to do that to it but if I had a crappier monitor (and stronger graphics card, my card can't do 1080P gaming) I'd have a really hard time resisting.

I have the same monitor as US, the S23A350H, it is damn good. Like almost all monitors it has a response time of 5ms, but it has the ability to go overdrive (2ms GTG) which removes most of the blur in fast moving images. Color representation is good, colors feel really vibrant and deep. The screen can be really bright, enough to hurt your eyes and to ruin colors, but you can just turn that down. The contrast of this screen is REALLY good, the static rating is close to 1200:1, beyond the normal static contrast of most screens which is 1000:1. Overall this is a great monitor for gaming.

I just bought a Dell ST2420L for a secondary screen, if you look around you'll find some really great prices. It's certainly not the best 24" LED on the market, but for the price nothing beats it.

On a side note, since it was holiday's a I missed all the specials including a R1699 ex vat for the S24A350H(yes 24"), I had a look around and found these various prices at Incredible Con for the S23A350H. R2499 at Woodmead and Northgate(I bought mine at Northgate eventually), R2999 at Fourways and R3499 at Sandton - all at Incredible Con. They did have a special for R2199 just before New Years but I missed it. I had a look at the Dell and that but the 2ms sold me. Online(Prophecy), you should be able to get it slightly cheaper.

Taking it out of the box, the brightness is set to 100 so I set it down to 65 and same with Contrast. However I noticed that in Skyrim, the game can get dark so I use the Lean 1 setting which brightens it up enough for Skyrim. Colours and all is very good

Error from above. The brightness is set to eco mode, Contast to 70 and Sharpness to 88.

Ok, I'm on the verge of buying so help me decide:

    Prophecy.co.za - SAMSUNG S23A350HS 23 2ms 1,000:1 Widescreen LED Monitor
    Prophecy.co.za - Samsung C23A550U Central Station 23 2ms 5,000,000:1 Widescreen LED Monitor
    Prophecy.co.za - Samsung S24A350HS 24 2ms 5,000,000:1 Rose Black Widescreen LED Monitor

I must say that the Central Station looks pretty badass, but I'm a bit confused as to how it works - would it need to be connected to my MacBook via USB for all the data transfer capabilities? Cos If so it's a no-go - I need the 2 x USBs on my MacBook - precious real estate at this point...
