Over the last couple of months, we've been slack with regards to this. It ends now.

With immediate effect, all flaming outside the flame zone will be met with an instant 48 hour ban. Second offence is a permanent ban. We've always tried to not use that ban button frequently, and to date, we've literally only banned a handful of people. It seems this method has caused us more harm than good. From now on, there'll be a lot more bannings, and a lot more suspensions. If you cannot live with the rules of this board, you're welcome to go some place else.

We will treat new users with the necessary friendliness to get them to feel welcome and become contributing members of this community. Anyone caught working against this ideal, will be removed from this community, and you are not welcome here.

I hope this makes the matter crystal clear.

Great idea. I would like to request, however, that you please define 'flaming' - what does it constitute in your view, especially WRT the Coffee Table? Because in my experience, especially as of late, a lot of CT threads become hostile after disagreement, and most of the time all parties are left with a pretty foul taste in their mouths after engaging in debates there. I've found that a lotta times it's not quite WHAT you say, but HOW you say it that makes the difference.

Unfortunately, flaming is a pretty difficult line to draw. Therefore, I cannot really give a list of things that would constitute flaming and things that wouldn't. We'll review each case on it's own merit, and will decide wether it can be regarded as flaming or not.

Bit late this, but is there no way that we could get a clear definition of what

constitutes flaming beforehand? Just so no-one crosses any lines and has to suffer

    a ban as a result.

I'll confess that I am a bit fuzzy on what flaming is. Is it an outright attack on another person, whether

on the topic at hand or not. Is it aggressively responding to a post? What's the difference between taking the p.iss and flaming?

Yeah, I've spent some time in the FZ, but I'm still not clear on the matter

    Hautori's mother is a whore = flame

Hautori's mother renders favours of a sexual nature in exchange for local currency = flame

Hautori, stop being a doos = not really a flame (unless the other person is hyper-sensitive e.g. larch)

Julius Malema is a ****-loving, ****-gobbling, ****-eating utter ****ing **** = not a flame (although you will be nailed for unacceptable behaviour)

It's not hard to work these things out. We rely on people using common sense. I know there isn't much going around, but taking a moment to think about somethign before saying it goes a long way.

Ha ha. Gracias, Jay. Like you said, it's common sense, but I'd rather look like a noob and ask outright

than blissfully walk into a ban.

    Cheers

Jay, would "If you started paying the whores, the US national debt would disappear" be considered a flame? Honest question, some forums regard it as a flame whereas other only regard namecalling as flames.

To elaborate on that, some forums would consider it (un)friendly banter with a sharp edge, waiting until I add "you POS" before it became a flame.

    Flaming != Swearing

It's that simple. The whole point is that outside of FZ you learn to argue, debate, discuss, etc without the need to insult. Occasionally someone will report something which we dismiss as being hyper-sensitive, but for the most part is a fairly straightforward guideline to stick to.

The way I am reading Firestar's post is that users should not be so unfriendly to the new comers or new posters etc and bully them before their feet have even touched the floor. Instead of just going straight for the jugular, maybe start with a little tap first. Across the board I've noticed an 'unwelcoming' tone with users who are testing the waters, maybe not so much now but it was happening for a while. I could be totally off the mark though, you can all hate me at once now O.o meh

Yeah insulting on forums can be a common thing,

What if the a post is flame-baiting? Of a caustic/luring nature?

Warnings and safety-paddle PM's to those members that walk on the fringe of acceptability?

Volde, I would love to use that approach, but history has taught us that 95% of people who are given polite warnings choose to respond by pissing all over them. It's not fair on the 5% who listen, but we can't cater to everyone individual and optimism about human nature only last for so long. Now, I moer.

"Damn, Jay, you're such an arrogant doos"

Yes I am, but it works and for the most part it keeps everything ticking along nicely and sometimes it's totally worth it. Look at Oj - a couple of months ago he picked up a temp baan for being a tool. Then he came back and has been a kief oke since. naomin had the same, came back and decided thaat jokes about cooking jews in ovens was fun. We can't win em all...

Cooking jews in ovens? Sorry but thats point blank sick!

On topic now... I do have to agree with FS here, I have also seen a lot of dudes attacking a topic and not even trying to add value to the thread, instead they trying to shoot the person down totally.

    +1 nice work PH dudes

I must say that it's been going pretty well lately. Not sure how the rest of you feel, but I think we made a lot of progress in this area.

You must also remember that we're not unreasonable people. Chances are that if it's your first offence, and you're generally a nice guy, who had a bad morning and flamed someone in a spur of not thinking, that we'll just have a chat with you. We're not unreasonable, and we're not out to get as many people banned as possible. We will assess every situation in it's own merit.

However, we have decided that temp bans is a very effective "warning". Once you get your temp ban, you'll consider strongly what your next actions are going to be, if you want to be here. If you don't, then you'll react in a way that'll get you banned permanently, and then we're all a lot more happy.
