512k Internet access, will it handle MMOs?

Will a 512k internet access handle MMOs? Which will it handle and which will it not handle you think?

Sadly I have to downgrade to 512k and I am looking at which ones I can play. Hoping SWTOR will work on it ;-(.

Latency will stay exactly the same, regardless of line speed.

I do believe that 512 has the same Upload as all the higher packages, so shouldn't be any problem at all.

I played MMO's for years on 384k, with no issues, the other thing is that Telkom does not supply 512k lines any more its either 384k, 1024 or above. Your ISP's account might only be 512k but you will still get a 1024k line speed and I have had no issues with it at all.

    imo....

    No.

longer ver : it depends. In my experience, raiding in WoW was crippling on 512k, but fine for regular stuff like levelling. Also, i waited forever for patches to download. FOREVER. Which is NOT FUN on patch days.

my 2c, it was easier for me to quit mmo's than to battle with a crappy line and horribad ms. I'll stick to online games where i can peer with people closer to me. Booyah for Diablo3, which is basically going to be exactly what I've been looking for - pseudo-mmo without all that 10-zillion-ms-coz-a-server-sits-in-NAziland bullcrud.

I played wow on a 384 and I could raid. Just really look at your add-ons as you need the lightest addons possible and make sure nothing else is downloading.

All my proper WoW raiding was also done on a 384kbps line, but that was 3-4 years ago. Still I would be somewhat surprised if 40KB/sec is not sufficient anymore for an MMO.

That said, I would say if possible try to not go lower than 1mbit/sec.

Well Shrike , do the math, a bandwidth heavy MMO for you is what? 40MB an hour? .

512kb/s = 64 kB/s = 225MB per hour . So your "pipe" is fat enough for most MMOs i'd say.

As for latency, as far as my experience go, that has nothing to do with your line speed, a 512k don't have better or worse latency than a 4MB line . It's all in the ISP and your line quality.

Now obviously if a particular MMO are using alot of bandwidth in a short time (i.e. when there's 100 players on the screen, but even my 4MB struggle with things like that...) , THEN you might have problems due to your line SPEED , not your latency.

A streaming type of MMO, like Guildwars might be problematic (i.e. downloading content in the background) , but SWTOR seems like stock standard local client to me, so i can't imagine a 512k being problematic .

Thanks so much for the maths and the good news!
If it does work then it will be amazing since it is uncapped. I never have to stress about paying 28c a meg when a patch hits my current favourite MMO again. I don't mind a day or to or three to download the patch.

The other things is, since this is a wireless ISP I am not sure how it will play out. They told me it was "shaped" but when asked what they mean by "shaped:" they said that it was priority shaped, so in the day it will be slow since the load on the network is high and I get low priority. When I asked if it was "shaped" in the technical sense, i.e. port shaped they stared at me with blank looks.

I will report once I test it ;-)

I have been playing MMOs on their "full" service for over 2 years now but at 25c a meg, which is highly stressful since I have to watch everything that myself and my family download and do on the internet since it becomes very expensive, very quick. It plays very well so far. I am hoping it will continue on this new uncapped "shaped" service.

At least now my wife and kids can play their browser based MMOs to their hearts content without daddy shouting at them to not play too long ;-P. Those things EAT UP bandwidth!

well the biggest issue for Shrike is the fact that telskelm don't have exchanges down where he lives...

no dsl so he has to use wireless

    This.

Your packet loss and general lagginess is going to be lousy any which way you look at it, and that's absolutely critical for any kind of online play. Gaming needs a stable, quality properly bi-directional line with minimal loss, not really a fat one-way pipe, which is pretty much the opposite of what wireless is.

Sorry, but take it from me, i tried the wireless thing for gaming and it just.didn't.work. And i bet most anyone who has will tell you the same thing.

Well if it's worked well enough so far, then it will probably carry on without a worry.

Well it turned out to be a dream come true! I could get a "1 meg" access, uncapped and "priority-shaped". I am getting a consistent 50k/s download which is great and the gaming rocks ;-)

Happy to see you finally sorted Shrike! and honestly I would take a 512 line over 3g any day of the week!
