When it comes to single player total immersion of a game experience then Skyrim wins hands down.
When it comes to Mutli Player and gaming continuity then Battlefield 3 is tops.

Dead Space has this in-your-face atmospheric quality that's really unique - Nothing worse tense than tensing up to the dramatic music and audio cues for 10 minutes only to find... nothing. Then another 10 minutes later.. BAM!
I found Crysis 2 to be visually mesmerising... I mean, translucent lighting? seriously?
As for Witcher 2, as much of a fan of it as I am (cos it's just plain awesome), I still think there are stronger competitors.
Then there's Portal 2 - had me in stiches! Pixar should be impressed; there was some seriously fine detail in the animation and voice acting that just made the game.
Ultimately though, I'd agree with R.I.P.P.E.R; Skyrim and Battlefield 3 are probably on top. BF3 definitely has my vote.
Aging is inevitable. Growing up is optional.

Skyrim for single player
BF3 for multiplayer.
Easily nailed but the bank balance was too.

Witcher 2 for me, skyrim and batman arkham city close second but skyrim has too many quest breaking bugs and batman has too many gfwl issues for me to give it to either of them.
