BF3 Tips and Tricks for noobs

    Hi all
I know we have a dedicated thread for BF3 but this is a tips and tricks thread for noobs and I want to keep it separate for obvious reasons.
Firstly a couple commands to help you see if your machine is 100% able to run BF3
Type in “render.perfoverlayvisible 1” and press enter to view a graph with details on your CPU and GPU performance as shown at the top of this post. The higher the line, the longer the time to render. So, you want to see low lines here with minimal spikes. Long render times indicate a performance bottleneck.
As many have noticed, player pings are not displayed in the score display (tab key) in BF3. However, it’s possible to display your ping by pressing the following key combination: Ctrl + Alt + S. This will make the text box shown below appear in the top right corner of your screen. The “IGO Time” indicates your ping to the server.
Type in “render.drawfps 1” and press enter to display your framerate

Has anyone got Ctrl+Alt+S to display ping? I haven't.

    Works fine for me.
You have to hold(Ctrl+Alt+S) keys down. As soon as you let them go the info disappear's from the top left corner.

You tend to run backwards when you have them pressed down.

Unless you have 'move backwards' bound to a key other than S

I have noticed people who have just started to play tend to leave themselves open and vulnerable. Camping doesn't work in BF3 and it's all the better for it.
Sitting still isn't a good idea unless you have cover. I usually run-look-shoot-turn-around-run in roughly the same direction I came from.
This way anyone behind you spawning is covered whilst you gave them time to sneak up on you.

I ran around The Cargo area last night collecting tags of noobs looking out towards the flags. If you guys ever played the sewers level from FEAR MP then you'll have an advantage.
Quick movements in a zig-zag pattern through the containers get's you kills.

    Very good advice JJ.

New players tend to either camp in one spot or run around like a headless chicken. The best way to play is cover to cover, moving as quickly as possible so that a sniper/lmg gunner doesn't get a good shot, and if you have loads of enemies looking your way its best to advance while prone.

My best tip I can give new players is spam the q key. I can't stress this enough. Pressing Q on a enemy will notify your team of that enemy and reveal his position. When playing in normal mode server spotting enemies can give you godlike powers. I always press Q when looking at a random hill or building and sure enough I'll find a hidden sniper that I couldn't spot with my eyes. Spotting a tank will allow AT troops or ground attack aircraft to quickly take out the threat. It's very difficult for aircraft to spot ground targets so you'll have to spot threats, help them help you. If you're on the ground and you see an enemy aircraft be a team player and spot the enemy plane for your team's pilots, it really helps them!

The zig-zag pattern is also great if you're being shot at from >200M, moving unpredictable will save your life.

Assault class tip: The best thing you can do is put your health pack down by an area of combat. Think of your team in Operation Metro trying to storm up a heavily fortified escalator. You can put your health pack there so your team can run back when they take damage, immediately heal up, then re-enter the fray, all while you earn tons of points.
BF3 is a very frustrating game when you are playing badly. I played a couple games last night that resulted in a 2:10 killeath ratio for myself. I was annoyed and frustrated so I watched a bit of TV and made dinner. Came back and ran through the game at full pelt, speed was everything. People can't hit you, you can't be pinned down and you catch people out. People run and run but don't check behind themselves unless they are experienced. You can use this to just follow someone until they stop and then stab them grabbing their dog tags. IF you run for too long or into open areas you are as good as dead. A few metres and then take out your gun and shoot the guy. If he looks around, shoot him.

If you are running and start getting hit: Don't stop. Just go find cover and try not to die. Leave that player and move on. He knows where you are and he has you covered.

Don't get stuck with 5 okes at an entrance but do put down a med kit for them and move on. 1 grenade or RPG and all 6 of you are dead men. Retreat.

Flanking is by far the best method to getting kills, not being noticed and pushing forward in the game. Don't camp cause people can sneak up on you whilst you are trying to kill the 3rd guy. RPG+silenced gun+clean kills=points and good base advancement. Panic and death are a good combo. Also helps your mates who might be stuck.

If you get in a tank please rush the bases. If you don't our team will lose.

I understand people are noobs at some point but the point of tanks is power and camping is for snipers.

The best tactics for tanks is rush into a base with a mate in the turret, kill obvious people and then move back and forth to avoid RPGs whilst looking for people to kill.

Do this and you'll get 1000 easy points in 2mins and have a tank at the end of the capture. Sit and camp, yelling 'pew pew', won't get you anything cept nailed by a guy in a heli.

Maybe I should focus less on BF3 and more on my grammar?

Anyway the expansion pack has been released and it's awesome.

Ok the latest patches seem to have fixed the stuttering with Hyper Threading. I have enabled it and it's fine.

If you need to format/re-install just take all the files from C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Battlefield 3 and copy them to your new drive after installing Origin and you should be able to just install and run.

    A couple of things:

Snipers seem to add very little if they stay in one spot on the map and I hope they get knifed.

If you call 'BS', 'hax','Lame tanks', etc, no one cares. It's the game. You are using the same physics [physx] as the rest of the players. If you die first you obviously have a bigger ego than skill level and should just go play football with 11 year olds so you never lose. Play the game, improve your weak spots, STFU.

The Medic has my favorite weapons and I score much more points with it than any other class, the support has the best anti tank methods if you know how, recon helps everyone with SoFlame and the mechanic is great if you stand behind the tank whilst it's getting nailed by missiles. I can't tell you how happy I am when someone revives me. Sit back when all your mates are in a tunnel and getting nailed [Seine crossing] and revive the hell out of everyone.

I can't stand medics that camp and don't help a person lying at their feet. Switch to sniper so we can ignore you.

Also if your FPS are low it's a much harder game-you need smooth game-play to get lots of kills with great players on the other team.

I'm trying to get a C4 video how to from youtube but basically you use other people to distract the tank and then creep up and do your thing. Use moving trees and shrubberies. Run away and boom.

Sit the other side of your teams attack or you will die, obviously. Some players are wary so be sneaky. You can put explosives on a tank, die and kill it after spawning.

Ideally you want a shipping container to hide behind when running away as those are indestructible.
